MIRACLE OF THE KILLER HERDSMEN, ELECTIONS AND US, YORÙBÁ’S
By Oloye Olaniyi
In the past 7 years, ethnic champions inundated us on this space with stories of marauding Fulani herdmens killing, raping, kidnapping and ravaging our farmlands trying to fulfill the expansionist agenda of the Usman Dan Fodio. They spare no words in describing this as a battle for survival for the Yoruba people, they bombarded our diasporans with videos and gory images “oftentimes concocted” of the aftermath of these attacks to solicit for funds and lobby foreign governments.
The gruesome murder of Pa Fashoranti’s daughter marked a watershed in the whole crisis, the Oke-ogun unrest was spinned out of proportion in no small way. The battle cry was sounded, reverberating in all the four corners of Yorubaland. A new freedom fighter was born in the renowned political tout Sunday Igboho, clothe as the savior of the Yoruba race. The opposition PDP through their media machinery drove these narrative to high heavens, suddenly all Radio and TV stations couldn’t stop talking about the topic the invasion of the South West. The Christian community too, drove these divisive and alarmist messages through mass broadcast via various whatsapp groups targeting our elderly with impressionable minds. These messages were too much be ignored with panic calls to keep forwarding to help save life’s.
Those of us who saw the crisis differently, cautioned that these were at best opportunistic criminal acts admittedly most of the perpetrators were of the Fulani extraction, crimes that were being massively weaponized for political reasons.
We watched as the Igangan attack and the reprisals happened, the Shasha incident is still very much fresh on our minds, the Ilé-Ifè mayhem too, all these results of the insecurities we unwittingly created in our own land. Save for the government’s belated intervention, Igboho was on course to forming his own IPOB style militant group to distabilize the peace of the South west region.
We warned and cried ceaselessly, they called us names; Fulani slaves, Buharists, and all.
Even the murder suspects of Dr Fatai Aborode in Oke Ogun were apprehended and arraigned in court it turned out to be PDP party stalwart in the area behind the killing this was hitherto blamed on Fulani herders. In Ado Ekiti, it turned out that Bunmi Ogunremi “an indigine” and his gang were the mysterious Fulani Herdsmen behind the kidnappings in the state capital when his gang was bursted by the police in 2021, in Shasha a minor altercation between traders in the market was blown out of proportion by the already charged atmosphere that resulted in multiple loss of lives and wanton destruction of properties.
Enter the election season, the party primaries contested, won and lost. We now know who the major contenders are, namely:
- PDP – Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
- APC – Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
- Mr Peter Obi
Suddenly the noise about killer herdsmen have since disappeared. The Fulani’s no longer want to take our land and forcefully convert us all to Islam.
Now it seems that the “Fulani’s are no longer killing us”, the next agenda is to demarket the main Yoruba contender in the race by all kinds of spurious allegations.
The worry now is with the options of the presidency narrowed down to 2 main contenders in Atiku and Bola Tinubu, a vote for the PDP is to return power to the same Northern Nigeria that you’ve very much vilified for the past 7 years for another 8 years. Or do we not reason that a protest vote in favor of Peter Obi is automatically creating a free passage for the PDP Hausa/Fulani to return to power? Make no mistake about it, PO’s presidential bid is headed nowhere and he knows this fact himself.
The latest bid by the religious wing of PDP “CAN” to misdirect the electorates from the real issues of Security, Economic recovery and good governance will be resisted headlong, enough of our docility, these folks are only crying over their loss of access to the seat of power.
The rein of the these disinformation agents has been allowed to run reasonably unchallenged for far too long, it’s time we said enough is enough.
When the campaign starts proper, we will have ample opportunity to hear from the contenders about their programs, plans and policies. The debate should be strict about capacity, competence and track record. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is more than capable to hold his own anywhere, any day and any time, he’s demonstrated these traits at the state level, let the City Boy have his day at the center.
